Contradictions

Before I present to you the argument that God showed to me in church that particular Sunday, we need to discuss logical contradictions, first. Many people do not understand the role that contradictions should play in our thinking. Since my arguments all consist of finding and exposing contradictions, it is important to appreciate contradictions for what they actually are.

Contradictions are logical impossibilities. Contradictions do not exist in reality, outside of ourselves. Contradictions only exist within our minds. Contradictions signal the brain that we are not thinking correctly about something. They show us when we have the wrong ideas.

The word ‘contradiction’ can be split into ‘contra,’ meaning against, and ‘diction,’ referring to speech. The literal meaning of the word ‘contradiction’ is to ‘speak against.’ Contradictions are when two statements have opposite meanings. When the first statement speaks against the second, and visa versa. For instance, Mike is Rachel’s father, and, Rachel is Mike’s mother. If either statement is true, then the other cannot be. Both statements cannot be true at the same time because each statement negates the other. If both statements refer to the same two people, then it is logically impossible that both statements are true.

Another example would be to say something like ‘2 = 0.’ This is a contradiction because two and zero are not equal. For instance, you can always divide by two, but never by zero. Since two and zero behave differently as divisors, they cannot be equated. Two and zero are not the same. In this sense, they are opposites.

So, when arguing logically, there are two basic ways to defeat an argument. Arguments consist of assumptions and reasoning. Assumptions are the initial starting points of an argument. The reasoning determines where you go from there. If an argument is wrong, it is either due to incorrect assumptions or to flawed reasoning. If the reasoning is flawed, you should show where and how it is wrong. But how can you show that the assumptions are wrong?

One way to show that a set of assumptions is incorrect, is to derive a contradiction from them. If the assumptions of an argument are self-contradictory, then the argument false flat on its face. Because, it is based on a logical impossibility.

On the path to true understanding, contradictions are necessary signposts along the way. At every signpost, we should stop and check our assumptions. We should ask ourselves, where and how are we wrong? Because, until we figure it out, we are operating with a false understanding. This could be fatal. Contradictions challenge us to see things from different points of view. Because ours is clearly wrong.
